Tips For Buying a Digital Camera

Looking for a digital camera as a point and shoot replacement? Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Batteries. If possible, do pick a camera that uses AA-size batteries. One advantage is that you can buy AA rechargeable batteries to save money, instead of having to buy expensive proprietary batteries. Another advantage is that when you are on the road, you can buy AA's so that you can keep on shooting.

Bytes. Digital cameras store the pictures on small memory cards. I recommend you pick a camera that uses Compactflash memory cards (CF cards). CF cards have been out for a while and the prices are cheaper per megabyte compared to other memory cards (Memory sticks, SD cards, etc.) Sony cameras usually only use the proprietary Memory stick format, so you'll pay more.

Brands. There are so many manufacturers and models. To get an idea of the quality of the photos a camera takes, check out sites like www.dpreview.com. DpReview has an active user forum where you can post questions and get a quick response. Another good site is www.steves-digicams.com Another site to check out is Pbase, check their list of cameras at http://www.pbase.com/cameras. You can view the photo qualities of the cameras you are considering.

Budget. There are lots of digital cameras nowadays that are going for $200 to $300 that offer decent photo quality and performance. If you want more than just a point and shoot, consider the speed and interchangeable lenses available with digital SLR's such as the Canon Digital Rebel, or Nikon D70.

Bigger and Badder. Don't just choose a camera because it has 5 mega, 6 mega or 7 megapixels. A 3 megapixel camera is usually adequate if all you usually want are 4x6 prints, or if you just want to post your photos online.

Buyer Beware. If the price you see advertised is too unbelievable, it may be so. Beware of companies that will bait and switch. Check out the credibility of an online merchant using sites like www.resellerratings.com.

Bells and whistles. When choosing a camera, try to narrow it down to the absolute must-haves. Do you want an ultra-compact camera that you can fit in your bag or jacket? Or do you need a 10x optical zoom for shooting from a distance? Or perhaps you need a camera that can shoot 4 frames a second?
